Eyebrows were raised in some corners when Arsenal decided to sign the former Chelsea winger on an expensive three-year contract.

Chelsea were happy to let him go on a free transfer after refusing to offer him a longer contract, but the Gunners snapped him up with a view to adding experience to Arteta’s squad.

But Willian has been a disaster in his first season at the Emirates Stadium and only scored his first goal for the club earlier this month.

But Arteta stressed that it is his failure that he failed to extract the best out of such a talented and experienced footballer.

He also indicated that the Brazilian will not be sold in the summer transfer window.

The Arsenal manager said in a press conference: “We signed a player with an incredible talent.

“This season has been difficult.

“I take full responsibility because I have to be the one getting the best out of him.

“Every player who is under contract is likely to be here with us next season.”

Willian will be 33 by the start of next season and is not one of the most popular players amongst the Gunners fan base due to his struggles.
