The youngster recently spent time with Premier League side Southampton, even going on to feature in games for the Saints as the club looked at him.

Now Roughan has an opportunity to impress at Thomas Tuchel’s Champions League finalists.

Appleton, who signed off on allowing the 17-year-old to agree to the trial, insists that he could not block the Lincoln talent from having the opportunity to head to Chelsea.

“Opportunities like that don’t come round very often,” Appleton said in an interview with Lincolnshire Live.

“We’re not going to send Sean out here, there and everywhere.

“But when Chelsea come knocking, it’s difficult for me to say to ‘Sean, you’re not going’.”

Roughan is under contract at Lincoln and if Chelsea wish to sign him on a permanent basis they will have to pay the Imps a fee.

Lincoln are currently chasing promotion to the Championship and are through to the League One playoff final after edging out Sunderland over two legs.
