The 28-year-old defender has spent the season on loan at Genoa and made 25 appearances in Serie A despite missing a major portion of the campaign at the beginning due to an injury.

Genoa do not have an option to make the move permanent and there are clubs in Italy who have taken note of his performances in the recently-concluded campaign.

He will enter the final year of his contract at Chelsea this summer and may not be in Thomas Tuchel’s plans.

Chelsea want to move him on in the coming months and according to Italian journalist Nicolo Schira, Atalanta have already put in enquiries for Zappacosta.

The defender is also not keen on a return to England and is interested in continuing in Italy.

A permanent move away from Chelsea is on the cards this summer as the club want a fee from his departure ahead of him turning into a free agent next year.

Atalanta are expected to sign a full-back this summer and Zappacosta seems to be on their radar.

It is unclear how much Chelsea might want to sell him.
