Emery masterminded Manchester United’s downfall and led his Villarreal side to the Europa League trophy on Wednesday night in Gdansk via a penalty shootout win.

It was the Spaniard’s fourth Europa League trophy and the only European final he lost was when he was Arsenal manager.

Emery was not one of the most popular figures when Arsenal sacked him in 2019, but it seems some of his former players still hold him in high regard.

Guendouzi heaped praise on his former Arsenal boss for helping a club such as Villarreal to fulfil their dream of winning a European trophy.

He admits that he feels proud that he got the opportunity to work under Emery when he was at Arsenal and learn from the Spaniard.

The Frenchman took to Twitter and wrote: “What a journey! This Football… so smart and elegant!

“You made the dream of an entire city, of a club, a team, and of all the fans come true! You did it! You know how to win trophies! Hats off Monsieur Emery.

“You are so unique.

“I am honoured and proud to have had the opportunity to evolve by your side.

“Words will never be strong enough to qualify your personality, your benevolence and your authenticity in human relationships.

“All my congratulations coach Unai Emery and bravo to Villarreal.”

Guendouzi had a falling out with Emery’s successor in Mikel Arteta and was frozen out of the squad before then being loaned to Hertha Berlin.
