McGregor was ever-present for Celtic in the middle of the park in the past season, playing almost every match in the Scottish Premiership for the Celts.

It was a disappointing season for the Hoops this time around as they their hopes of ten Scottish top flight titles in a row were dashed and it was also the first season for McGregor where his team did not lift the league title since his debut for the Scottish giants in the summer of 2014.

McCall believes that currently McGregor is playing well below his personal level and is, if not entirely bereft of it, then at least severely lacking in confidence heading into the European Championship.

The former Scottish international posited that the reason for McGregor’s drop in form is burnout after a demanding and rigorous season, but he nonetheless backed the Celtic star to give everything he has got for the national team.

“He’s probably a bit fatigued after a campaign where he hasn’t been tip-top: he won’t have lost his confidence but he isn’t bursting with it either”, McCall was quoted as saying by the Herald Scotland.

“At the moment he’s probably a six or a seven out of ten whereas before he was always an eight or a nine.

“You can sometimes suffer from burnout, especially when you’re a player who wants to play all the time.

“Sometimes that decision has to be taken out of your hands but, like everyone else in the Scotland squad, he’s desperate to play in his first ever major tournament.”

The Celtic midfielder has already made 30 appearances for the Scotland team and he will be itching to play in his first major tournament in the form of the European Championship.
