The Norwegian midfielder is in demand in the ongoing transfer window despite Sheffield United’s relegation from the Premier League last season.

He is tipped not to want to stick around to play in the Championship and is expected to move on from Bramall Lane in the summer.

Arsenal are one of several Premier League clubs who have an interest in Berge, but the midfielder has also been attracting interest from Italy.

Napoli have been tracking him for months and, according to Italian daily Gazzetta dello Sport, Spalletti has now given his approval to their attempt to sign him.

The 62-year-old took charge of Napoli this summer and is in consultation with sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli over recruitment.

Spalletti agrees with the club hierarchy’s interest in Berge and wants him to be part of his squad ahead of next season.

Napoli are preparing to make a move for him and are expected to propose a loan offer with an obligation to buy for Berge.

It remains to be seen whether such an offer is good enough for Sheffield United to pull the trigger on his departure.
