Casilla left Leeds to join Elche on loan in the ongoing transfer window after finding himself as the number 2 to young goalkeeper Illan Meslier last season in the Premier League.

The Spaniard chose to return to his homeland and conceded that he is aware Elche are not one of the fancied teams of La Liga.

But the goalkeeper believes that Elche are a club with potential and he was convinced by the project they pitched to him during negotiations.

Casilla was quoted as saying by Spanish daily Mundo Deportivo: “They convinced me about the project at Elche and it is an exciting one.

“Although they are a club who have not been in La Liga for many years, everyone knows that they have the potential.”

Elche finished just a spot above the drop zone last season in La Liga and are one of the teams who are expected to fight for survival next term.

Casilla conceded that the realistic goal for Elche is to stay up in La Liga next season and is sure that it will be great if they do it without having to chew their nails.

“You have to be realistic and know that we are one of the teams involved [who could be in the relegation battle].

“It would be great if we achieved staying up without struggling.”
