Romero’s future at Atalanta is under the scanner as he is subject of serious interest from Premier League club Tottenham.

Tottenham’s football managing director Fabio Paratici has been in talks with the Italian club over taking the Argentine to the north London club this summer.

Spurs are yet to come up with an acceptable offer for Romero and pressure on Tottenham ramped up when it emerged Barcelona also failed with a bid for the defender.

A Barcelona source told Spanish daily Mundo Deportivo that the club believe Romero is “a very good central defender”, but he is “not a priority” because no centre-backs have left the Camp Nou.

Barcelona are fighting a serious financial crisis, which has seen them shop in the free-agent market in the ongoing window.

They would only be able to land Romero on a loan deal, though they would be willing to cover his entire salary.

Atalanta are not considering such an agreement currently, putting Tottenham in front in the chase to sign Romero.
