Areola joined the Hammers on loan from Paris Saint-Germain on Thursday, with West Ham retaining an option to make the move permanent.

The Frenchman will compete for the number 1 shirt with veteran goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski, who signed a new one-year contract towards the end of last season.

Areola was back at PSG this summer and several clubs were interested in getting their hands on the goalkeeper.

And according to French sports daily L’Equipe, what worked in West Ham’s favour was that the goalkeeper wanted to return to the Premier League and more importantly, to London.

He owns a house in England’s capital and his family are enjoying being in London and are well settled in the city.

Areola’s priority was to find a club in the Premier League and West Ham’s London base was a big factor in him joining the Hammers.

Areola will hope to do enough to convince West Ham to sign him on a permanent deal next year.
