Having completed the signings of Pierluigi Gollini and Bryan Gil from Atalanta and Sevilla, respectively, Spurs have turned their attention towards signing a defender.

Tottenham have identified Romero as their top defensive target for the transfer window and Fabio Paratici has been working overtime to get a deal over the line.

With Tottenham locked in talks with Atalanta over a deal and Romero keen on a move to London, there has been a feeling that the deal will be finalised soon.

Now, the north London outfit have made significant progress in their attempts to sign the Argentina international, with a £47m deal close to being struck.

It appears the central defender will become Nuno Espirito Santo’s third signing at Tottenham following Gollini and Gil.

Romero is also in line to become the Premier League club’s second most expensive signing behind Tanguy Ndombele, who joined the club for an initial £56m fee.

As Tottenham edge closer to the signing of Romero, they are also said to be interested in acquiring the services of Adama Traore from Nuno’s former club Wolves.
