The Gunners are in the market for a new playmaker, with Martin Odegaard looking increasingly likely to stay at Real Madrid after returning from his loan spell at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal have identified Leicester’s Maddison as an ideal replacement for Odegaard, with the 24-year-old said to be at the top of their transfer wish list.

Mikel Arteta’s side are prepared to step up their interest in the Englishman, but Leicester’s asking price of over £60m has been a major sticking point.

In an attempt to bring the price down, the north London club have now proposed a player plus cash deal for the former Norwich City midfielder.

A number of players are said to have been mentioned in negotiations, but it remains to be seen who exactly the Gunners are willing to offer in exchange for Maddison.

Arsenal, though, do not have a free run at signing the England international, with another club in London also said to be interested in signing him.

Like Arsenal, the other London club have also proposed a player plus cash deal in an attempt to acquire the midfielder’s services from Leicester.

With the chase for Maddison heating up, it remains to be seen where the 24-year-old will ply his trade next season.
