Spurs are snapping up the Argentina international after managing to reach an agreement with Italian side Atalanta for his services.

They are now on the home stretch and, according to Argentine journalist Cesar Luis Merlo, contracts are being exchanged between the two clubs.

Romero is scheduled to travel to England on Thursday night as he puts the finishing touches to the move from his end.

The Argentine will slot into Spurs’ squad and provide new boss Nuno with another option in defence following the departure of Toby Alderweireld.

Romero will instantly see a familiar face, with Tottenham already having signed a player from Atalanta this summer in the shape of Pierluigi Gollini.

The defender also attracted interest from Spanish giants Barcelona.

However, Barcelona’s financial situation means they were unable to provide serious competition to Spurs for Romero, with the player wanting to move to north London.
