Having completed the signing of Joe Willock from Arsenal for a fee in excess of £20m, the Magpies have now turned their attention towards bringing in a defender.

Newcastle’s need for a new central defender was highlighted in their Premier League defeat to West Ham at the weekend when they conceded four goals at home.

Steve Bruce’s side are working on a tight budget this summer and could have to turn to loan signings to strengthen their squad further before the transfer window slams shut.

Newcastle had asked to be kept informed about the availability of fringe stars at top-eight sides and have now lodged enquiries for a host of players at those clubs.

Arsenal’s Rob Holding and Liverpool’s Nathaniel Phillips are among the defenders Newcastle have been linked with this summer and it remains to be seen if they are among the players they have enquired about.

The Magpies recruitment staff are also keen admirers of Marseille midfielder Boubacar Kamara, who can also operate as a central defender.

Apart from signing a defender, Newcastle could also sign a midfielder and a striker before the transfer window slams shut.
