The Whites are keen to strengthen their midfield options before the transfer window slams shut and have identified Huddersfield star O’Brien as an ideal candidate.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side have been in negotiations with the Championship outfit over a deal for the 22-year-old and have had offers turned down by them.

There have been suggestions that Leeds will make a £7m offer for O’Brien this week, while there have also been claims that the player is on the verge of a move to Elland Road.

However, the Yorkshire-based club are not close to reaching an agreement over the transfer of the midfielder and a move is not imminent, contrary to claims.

The Premier League club’s interest in the former Bradford City loanee has not gone beyond offers that have already been rejected by Huddersfield.

O’Brien starting in the Terriers’ 1-0 victory over Preston North End in the Championship on Tuesday is thought to be a suggestion that Leeds are yet to strike a deal.

The Whites have also not opened talks with O’Brien or his representatives over personal terms, with a deal yet to be agreed with Huddersfield.
