Having suffered relegation from the Bundesliga last season, Schalke are keen to earn their way straight back into the German top flight.
The Ruhr giants are facing financial difficulties, but are keen to strengthen their squad within their limited budget and have identified Itakura as an ideal target.
Schalke have reached an agreement with Manchester City to sign the defender on an initial loan deal, with the option to make the move permanent for €4m also included in the agreement.
The Japan international has now edged closer to completing his move to Schalke, having passed his medical with the club today.
Having successfully completed his medical, Itakura will now put pen to paper on a loan contract with the 2. Bundesliga outfit.
The central defender had a lengthy loan spell at Dutch side Groningen and will now ply his trade for Schalke.
Apart from playing as a centre-back, Itakura can also operate as a holding midfielder.
