Bamford was overlooked when Gareth Southgate picked his England squad for the summer’s European Championship, where the team ended up as the runners-up to eventual champions Italy.

Ahead of the first international break of the season, the forward made his way into the England set-up and earned his first England cap against Andorra over the weekend.

Dorigo admits that he was elated to see Bamford finally get his chance with England at the age of 28.

He pointed out that the Leeds striker has come through a lot of trials and tribulations in his career to finally get the opportunity to represent his country on the international stage.

Dorigo wrote in his column for the Yorkshire Evening Post: “What a fantastic honour Sunday’s England game was for Patrick Bamford.

“It’s amazing, starting for the first time for his country at 28 years of age, on his birthday after a career in which he’s had to stick at it, going to goodness knows how many clubs and having to evolve.

“No one can take that away from him and he should be hugely proud.”

Marcelo Bielsa has shown unnerving faith in Bamford since he took charge of Leeds in 2018 and the striker has been pivotal in the Whites being promoted and settling down in the Premier League.
