Bamford, now 28, made his England debut last weekend when he started in the country’s 4-0 win over Andorra.

The striker did not get on the scoresheet on his debut performance but it was the culmination of years of hard work, which also included him rejecting an offer to represent Ireland.

Beckford insisted that he loved the performance from the Leeds striker and believes it had all the clever movements and running that is the hallmark of Bamford’s game up front.

However, he feels the England players did not show enough faith in the striker when he made those movements and believes there was a clear lack of understanding of Bamford’s game and what he brings to the table up front.

Asked about Bamford’s debut performance for England, Beckford said on the official Leeds United Podcast: “I loved it.

“He did everything right, made all the right movements, getting in the channels and putting the defenders under a constant amount of pressure.

“It was almost like everybody in the team was told not to pass to him because he didn’t receive the ball in those dangerous positions whenever he made the great runs and the great movements that we are used to seeing on a weekly basis.

“For me, that is down to a little bit of lack of trust, lack of understanding of Patrick’s game and what his strengths are.

“It was a very good and accomplished first performance from Patrick.”

Bamford will be back in familiar territory this weekend when he is expected to start for Leeds against Liverpool on Sunday.
