Hume’s future at the Stadium of Light has been one of the major topics of discussion among the Sunderland faithful throughout this summer as he had not signed a new deal following the expiration of his contract.

The Sunderland academy product finally put pen to paper on a new two-year deal at the Wearside giants on Thursday with an option for a further one-year extension, as they push to earn promotion into the Championship this term.

Black Cats boss Johnson is delighted with securing Hume’s services and has thrown down the gauntlet for him to keep improving his game as the season progresses.

Johnson is confident that he and his coaching staff will be able to iron out Hume’s weakness with proper training while further sharpening all his strengths.

“Our only regret is that this wasn’t completed sooner, but we are delighted to have retained another quality player to our squad”, Johnson told Sunderland’s official site.

“He is a player that I’m very excited to work with because I see his strengths and his weaknesses, but more than anything I see a young man with high potential.

“If he is a good student and is consistent in approach, as he always has been since day one, then I believe we can iron out his flaws and turn his strengths into super strengths.

“He has a wonderful vehicle here with a great set of staff that want to help him in every way, so his challenge now is to keep improving.”

Sunderland are back in League One cation at the weekend when they host Accrington Stanley and it remains to be seen whether Hume will play a part in that game.
