Karius has a year left on his contract and has little to no opportunity of playing first-team football at Anfield this season.

He had a bad loan spell at Union Berlin last season and the club were keen to find a solution for him in the summer.

There were a dearth of offers for Karius who did not pull up trees on loan spells in Turkey and Germany in the last three years, but there was a concrete bid on Liverpool’s table for him.

It has been claimed that Basel made a concrete offer to take Karius to Switzerland in the last transfer window.

Liverpool were believed to be ready to accept the bid, but Karius failed to agreed on personal terms with Basel.

With no agreement between the club and the player, Liverpool were forced to keep the German on their books.

He has been training with Liverpool’s goalkeeping coach John Achterberg but has little chance of being in the first team.

Karius will have to wait until at least January to try and leave Anfield for good and end his association with Liverpool.
