The forward was a vital part of the Barnsley squad that reached the Championship playoffs last season, scoring four goals and registering three assists in 34 appearances.

He arrived at Portman Road this summer, dropping down a level from the Championship to League One to re-unite with Cook, whom he played under at Portsmouth during the 2015/16 and 2016/17 seasons.

Chaplin admitted that the decision to sign for Ipswich was anything but straightforward and stated that playing under Cook convinced him about coming to Portman Road.

The forward was also compelled by the vision presented to him by the club and he is looking forward to helping Ipswich reach the Championship.

Speaking to The Athletic, Chaplin said: “It was not a straightforward decision.

“The manager was a big reason for me signing.

“The vision the club had of the squad, I knew the quality would be there.

“In terms of the signings that followed, it was exactly as explained.

“I want to play at the highest level possible.

“It sounds a bit contradictory to drop down a level but Ipswich is a big club.

“They want to get promoted and then compete again in the Championship.

“It’s exciting.”

Ipswich, who made wholesale changes to their squad over the course of the summer transfer window, have toiled so far this season with just three points from their opening six League One games.

Cook’s side sit third from bottom and have yet to win, something they will hope to change this afternoon when they meet Lincoln City away.
