Celtic signed last season’s Eredivisie top scorer in the summer but he is yet to make his debut for the club due to a calf injury.

Ange Postecoglou confirmed on Wednesday that the striker could be back in the squad when his side face Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League at Parkhead tonight.

With Celtic struggling at the moment, the news of the forward possibility returning is a positive but Provan indicated that he is not sure how good a decision it would be to rush him back.

He says that his potential return tonight has surprised him as calf injuries are notoriously difficult to recuperate from and players are usually extra careful about getting back on the pitch due to the chances of it becoming a recurring problem.

Provan said on Go Radio Football Show: “I have got to say I am surprised that Giakoumakis is in the frame at all.

“A calf injury is quite similar to hamstring, you can’t really take any chances with it as you are not really sure when it is going to go again.

“Normally, you will give yourself an extra week when you feel okay to make sure that you are okay.

“I am surprised that he is in the frame for tomorrow evening [tonight].”

Celtic will look to be extra careful about getting their new signing into the team at Parkhead tonight.
