Hawkes is on loan at the Super White Army for the duration of the season and has so far made eight appearances for them in all competitions.

Having already opened his account in the EFL Cup for Tranmere, the on-loan talent got on the scoresheet for the first time in League Two as the Super White Army beat Colchester United by two goals to nil.

Mellon stated that the Tranmere squad lacked some quality in the wide areas of the pitch and thus the decision was taken to bring Hawkes on loan.

The Super White Army boss further revealed that when he first arrived at Prenton Park, Hawkes was not as fit as was desired but he has improved continuously and is getting fitter by the minute.

Speaking to Tranmere’s official site, Mellon said: “He’s [Hawkes] a fantastic addition to the squad, we’re delighted to have him here.

“We were always determined that we were going to try and get some flair in wide areas and some class in wide areas, so when we were able to get him from Sunderland we were really pleased.

“He’s getting fitter, he never came here as fit as everybody else because he was a wee bit on the back foot.

“But, as you can see he’s a strong boy and he’s getting fitter all the time and he’ll be more and more important for us as the season goes on.”

Hawkes will be hoping that he can have a successful season out on loan at Prenton Park and he can build on the success of his spell when he is back at the Stadium of Light.
