The Wearside-based club will be looking to build on their 2-1 victory over Lincoln City in the EFL Trophy when they lock horns with Manchester United Under-21s.

Looking ahead to the fixture, former Sunderland star Elliott revealed that he hopes to see more youngsters in action and is keen to see the side build on their win over Lincoln.

Excited about Sunderland’s clash with Manchester United, the former forward explained that it will be a good test for Johnson’s side though they are going up against the Red Devils’ youth side.

Having seen the likes of Dan Neil and Stephen Wearne shine in Sunderland’s win over Lincoln, Elliott is hopeful that more players take the opportunity against Manchester United.

Away from the league, I’m looking forward to seeing some more young lads tomorrow [Tuesday; ed.] night against Manchester United in the Papa John’s Trophy at the Stadium of Light“, Elliott wrote in his Sunderland Echo column.

Hopefully, we can see more of what we saw at Lincoln City last week in the same competition.

“It may be their young team but games against Manchester United are always going to be a good test and one that the Sunderland players hopefully grasp.”

Sunderland will be hopeful of registering their second win in the EFL Trophy when they host Manchester United Under-21s at the Stadium of Light.
