The Magpies are now the richest club in world football following their takeover by a consortium dominated by Saudi Arabia’s public investment fund.

They are now being credited with an interest in a host of big name players across the game and Barcelona midfielder Coutinho is claimed to be someone they hold an interest in.

Selling Coutinho to Newcastle and removing his wages from their salary bill would be a big boost for Barcelona in a time of financial trouble.

However, according to Sky Italia, Barcelona have yet to see any evidence that Newcastle want Coutinho.

If the Magpies are keen to sign the Brazilian midfielder, they have yet to give any signal to Barcelona over a potential swoop.

Newcastle are expected to look to appoint a new manager soon, along with a sporting director.

And it is unclear if they have settled on targets they want to chase in January without either appointment yet having been made.
