Bruce’s days are numbered at Newcastle and fans are expected to get their wish of seeing him leave the club in the coming days and weeks.

Amanda Staveley held talks with key advisers on Monday to decide the fate of the Newcastle manager and he is almost certain to be sacked.

A number of out-of-work managers such as Frank Lampard, Paulo Fonseca or Antonio Conte have been considered viable candidates to become their new manager.

But it has been claimed that Gerrard and Villarreal boss Unai Emery have emerged as the favourites to replace Bruce at Newcastle.

The Rangers boss stopped short of ruling himself out of contention when asked about Bruce and Newcastle last week.

There are suggestions that Gerrard might feel that he has taken Rangers as far as possible and would be willing to leave Ibrox.

Emery is also an appealing candidate for Newcastle due to his success at Paris Saint-Germain, Sevilla and Villarreal, despite his failure at Arsenal.

However, any decision to sack Bruce will have to be ratified by the PIF who want a succession plan in place before taking a call on the current Newcastle manager’s future.
