Newcastle are theoretically the richest club in the world at the moment due to the involvement of Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund, who are prepared to power their rise in the coming years.

But the reality is that the Magpies are yet to win a league game this season and are sitting 19th in the Premier League table on three points after eight games.

They are at real risk of getting relegated despite their newfound status and Agbonlahor admitted that if he was playing he would want them to go down this season.

He stressed that Premier League clubs want to see Newcastle get relegated and the players will raise their game as they will not want to see them spend their riches to power themselves up the league table any time soon.

The former striker said on talkSPORT: “If I was a player with a player’s mentality, I want Newcastle to go down. Every other club want Newcastle to go down.

“You are going to be raising your game even more against Newcastle because you are going to see the power they have got and you are going to want them to get relegated and see them spend this money.

“I would [want them to get relegated] if I was a player, 100 per cent.

“They have got this big takeover, they are going to spend money so you are going to want them down.”

Newcastle are in the middle of a managerial search and are grappling with what profile of manager they want at the moment given their place in the league table.
