The Magpies are desperate to make additions to their squad over the course of the January window as they look to give their hopes of survival in the Premier League a shot in the arm.

Defence is a priority and Lille defender Botman is a key target for the St James’ Park outfit.

However, Lille are reluctant to sell in mid-season, especially as they are on course to qualify for the knockout rounds of the Champions League, and would prefer to cash in during the summer window.

It is suggested that Newcastle would need to offer a fee in the region of £40m to tempt Lille to sell.

Adding in Botman’s wage demands, the deal would represent a significant investment from Newcastle.

Whether the Magpies are prepared to spend such sums in January, with no guarantee they will still be a Premier League club next season, is unclear.

It is claimed that Newcastle boss Eddie Howe is thought to approve of the club snapping Botman up.
