The 25-year-old striker has been used as an example of the muddled recruitment strategy Newcastle had under their previous owner Mike Ashley.

He has struggled to fit in at Newcastle since his arrival in 2020 for a big fee of £40m but the forward has looked more potent under new manager Howe.

Joelinton has only scored once this season but has been a constant in the team under the new manager and put in another solid performance in Newcastle’s first win of the season against Burnley last weekend.

Vieira stressed that it was clear after Howe arrived that Joelinton would be perfect for what the Newcastle manager wants from his players.

He insisted that the Brazilian is enjoying the clear and concise instructions he has been getting from the Newcastle boss and is finally sure about his role in the team.

“When Eddie Howe arrived, we pressed the reset button. We watched Bournemouth clips and received valuable feedback from Joelinton on what Howe expected of him”, Vieira told The Athletic.

“What was clear was that Joelinton would be perfectly suited to Howe’s style.

“He’s capable of pressing at a very intense level, maintaining possession and has strength driving forward with the ball, which are all things Howe likes.

“Joelinton has already seen that himself from his conversations with the manager.

“Joelinton has it very clear in his mind what Howe wants from him.

“He is getting detailed instructions and is benefitting from that.”

Joelinton will hope to add numbers to his performances and score more as Newcastle look to lift themselves up from the relegation zone in the coming weeks.
