Leeds suffered their heaviest defeat in the Premier League when they were hammered 7-0 by Manchester City at the Etihad on Tuesday night as they produced a woeful performance against a rampant Citizens side.

The Whites are now perilously close to the relegation zone and have struggled to match the heights of their performances from last season.

Marcelo Bielsa has often been reluctant about spending money in the winter transfer window due to the particular physical condition he wants his players to be in order to feature in his team.

However, Hughes stressed that Leeds need one or two new signings of quality who will walk into the dressing room and instantly lift the spirit within the squad and give the fans something to cheer.

The former White said on BBC Radio Leeds after the Etihad debacle: “We have got a world-class manager and we are a world-class club.

“We might need one or two additions that walk into that dressing room and get the hairs on the back of your neck lifted.

“Just something that completely wow, lifts the fans, lifts the players.

“But also [someone who] gets the culture and gets our city.”

Leeds will look to roar back with a result when they host Arsenal at Elland Road on Saturday and Bielsa will need to pick his troops up quickly for the task.
