The 24-year-old forward joined Crystal Palace on loan in January for 18 months and the Eagles have an option to make the move permanent in the summer.

But Mateta has been a fringe player under Patrick Vieira this season and he has made just two Premier League appearances in the ongoing campaign.

For the moment, it seems Crystal Palace are unlikely to make the move permanent and there has been talk of the club cutting short his loan and sending him back to Mainz in the winter transfer window.

And Heidel also stressed that he does not see Mateta returning to the German club in January.

He claimed there are many reasons why the striker will not be leaving Crystal Palace and moving back to Mainz next month.

The Mainz sporting director told German magazine Kicker: “[It] is almost impossible in the winter for a variety of reasons.”

It seems Mateta will be staying at Crystal Palace until the end of the season and he will be hopeful of convincing Vieira in order to get more opportunities.

The striker has a contract until 2023 with the German club.
