Newcastle are in the market for a director of football but the appointment is not likely until after the end of the January transfer window.

The operation is being conducted by an external recruitment company named Nolan Partners and they are looking at a number of options.

And Ashworth is one of the names the club and their recruitment partners are closely looking at the moment.

It has been claimed Brighton have already allowed Newcastle to conduct negotiations with Ashworth in their bid to bring in a director of football.

The 50-year-old has attracted interest from several clubs due to the work he has carried out as technical director at Brighton.

The Seagulls want him to stay but the club do not want to stand in anyone’s way if they are keen to consider other appealing opportunities.

Contact has been established between Ashworth and Nolan Partners and more talks are expected to take place in due course.

Brighton have been left impressed with the way Newcastle and their recruitment partners have conducted themselves and the way they have made their approach.
