McGregor lifted his first trophy as Celtic captain when his side beat Hibernian in the Scottish League Cup final on Sunday.

The midfielder had big shoes to fill when Scott Brown left Celtic at the end of last season, but McGregor has been flawless and guided the team to their first trophy of the campaign as well.

Ferguson stressed that the likes of Kyogo Furuhashi have been earning the plaudits for his goals this season but he stressed that the Celtic captain has been their best player in the ongoing campaign.

He expressed his approval at the way he has handled the pressure of being the club captain at Celtic and it has only taken his game to another level.

The former midfielder said on the Go Radio Football Show: “Yes, [it was a huge day for him], it’s his first trophy as captain.

“There is no doubt about Callum McGregor, he has been a standout performer.

“Everyone has gone on about Kyogo because of the goals he has scored and Jota, who is out injured but for me, the most consistent performer has been Callum McGregor.

“There was a lot of pressure on his shoulders when he took over the captaincy but I think he has handled it extremely well.

“And it has taken his game to the next level.”

McGregor and Celtic will hope to hunt down Rangers in the title race in the coming months starting with the Glasgow derby before the winter break.
