Sunderland suffered a 5-1 at the hammering of Arsenal in the last eight of the EFL Cup and were knocked out of the competition following an encouraging run.

The Black Cats are focused on getting promoted from League One to the Championship this season and are currently third in the standings.

Fjortoft was watching on and was pleased with what he saw from the Black Cats.

The former Premier League striker loved the energy Johnson and his Sunderland team displayed against their more fancied opponents away from home in the EFL Cup quarter-final, while he also quipped the manager’s coaching staff look like his brothers.

Fjortoft took to Twitter and wrote: “I liked the energy of Sunderland- manager Lee Johnson and his team last night.

“I think they look like triplets by the way.”

Sunderland will hope to dust off after the EFL Cup defeat and prepare for league action away from home at Doncaster next Monday.

Johnson’s side are just two points behind the automatic promotion spots in the League One table.
