The north London club produced a commanding performance at home to beat Crystal Palace 3-0 and kept themselves firmly in the race to finish in the top four this season.

Spurs have won four of their last five league games and are emerging as one of the top contenders to break into the Champions League spots.

Lucas scored once and assisted twice in the win and admits that it was a special day for him in Spurs colours.

He insisted that the north London club have only been improving with each passing game under Conte and the Brazilian is happy in where Spurs find themselves at this stage of the season.

Lucas was quoted as saying by the BBC: “Very nice. I’m very happy. It was a special day for me and my family.

“A very important three points. It was a solid performance. Each game we are improving. We just need to keep going this way.

“It was a nice goal and a nice ball from Emerson [Royal] as well.”

He added: “Every game we are improving this point.

“When we try to recover the ball back quickly we have quick players up front that can cause problems.

“It is not bad [league position]. There are a lot of games to play.

“We are taking it step by step and game by game and working hard. If we keep going this way.”

Tottenham are scheduled to travel to the south coast to take on Southampton on Tuesday afternoon, before they then welcome in the new year at Watford.
