The 29-year-old midfielder has been a bit-part player at Arsenal this season and his contract will expire next summer.

He is likely to leave the Gunners on a free transfer at the end of the season but Arsenal are open to selling for a small fee in the winter transfer window.

Elneny has been heavily linked with a move to Turkey but it has been claimed that he is attracting interest from Italy as well.

According to Italian daily Il Messaggero, Roma have been in contact with Arsenal and have enquired about the possibility of signing the 29-year-old.

Jose Mourinho wants to bring in midfield reinforcements in the winter transfer window and Roma are looking at a number of options.

Elneny has emerged as a target for the club and he is on their shortlist as they look for new signings.

But he is not a priority target as he will soon be involved in the Africa Cup of Nations for Egypt and Roma want to bring in someone who will slot straight into the squad next month.

However, a move for Elneny could become a possibility if Roma miss out on other targets next month.
