The Scottish giants are selling full-back Nathan Patterson to Everton in a deal which could eventually net them £16m, but they are also keen to make signings this month too.

New York City FC defender Sands has been zeroed in on and it is claimed that the 21-year-old will join Rangers on loan with an option to buy.

The loan deal will run for 18 months and allow Rangers to assess the defender before pulling the trigger on a purchase option.

Rangers have beaten off competition from several German clubs, as well as other sides from major European leagues.

Sands is a centre-back by trade, but he is also able to slot in as a right-back, deep-lying midfielder or central midfielder.

Rangers will be looking for Sands to quickly adapt to the demands of Scottish football and put pressure on the other defenders in the squad.

Sands has seven international caps for the United States to his name and won the MLS Cup last month.
