Toffees boss Rafael Benitez is keen on bolstering his midfield in the ongoing window and has zeroed in on Longstaff, his former charge at Newcastle, as an option.

The Spaniard gave Longstaff his senior debut in 2018 and wants him at Goodison Park as he looks to guide Everton to a good second half of the campaign.

Everton slapped in a bid for the midfielder on Wednesday with his current deal at St James’ Park set to expire in the summer.

But Newcastle are keen to hold on to the 24-year-old beyond this season and are locked in talks over a new deal.

And the Magpies have rejected Everton’s offer for the midfielder as they hope to tie him down on fresh terms.

Newcastle are embroiled in a relegation scrap and they see Longstaff playing a role under boss Eddie Howe as they look to get out of trouble.

It remains to be seen whether Everton will make further moves to snare away Longstaff in the ongoing window and whether Newcastle might reconsider their position.
