Cantwell’s future at Norwich is under the scanner as he is linked with an exit from the club, with Newcastle United and another Premier League club interested in securing his services.

The Magpies are in talks with Norwich over a move for the midfielder and they are open to letting him go for a fee in the £15m to £20m range.

Canaries boss Smith acknowledged there is a lot of speculation around the 23-year-old’s future at the moment but insisted he does not know whether he will leave the club.

However, Smith stressed he hopes Cantwell will remain at his disposal beyond this month and keep on performing well for the team.

Asked about Cantwell’s future, Smith told a press conference: “I know there is an awful lot of speculation.

“But he is in contention to play on Sunday.

“I don’t handle the speculation.

“I don’t know is the honest answer.

“Hopefully he is here and playing well.”

Newcastle are keen on roping in a midfielder and it remains to be seen whether Cantwell will join Magpies boss Eddie Howe and help them to climb to safety in the second half of the league campaign.
