There are claims in England that Newcastle are closing in on a deal to sign the 28-year-old centre-back from Sevilla this month.

It has been suggested that Newcastle’s persistence is paying off as the defender is claimed to be pushing for a move and has told Sevilla that he wants to move to England.

But those claims have been rubbished in Spain and Sevilla are still digging in their heels in order to keep Carlos at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium beyond the end of the current window.

According to Sevilla.ABC.es, Carlos is not for sale as long as Sevilla do not receive an offer that is substantially over the odds and is irresistible.

Newcastle’s bids for the defender have not cut the mustard for the Spanish club and Sevilla see no reason why they should sell the Brazilian.

They are in the middle of a title race with Real Madrid and want to keep Carlos to keep their La Liga aspirations on the track.

Sevilla have also denied suggestions that the defender is pushing for the move and has in any way told the club that he wants to leave.

The Spanish club do not believe that Newcastle would be prepared to pay the kind of fee that they would need to justify selling a player of Carlos’ importance in the middle of the season to their fans.
