The Magpies have been working hard on reaching an agreement to sign the Brazilian midfielder amid talk that they have scheduled a medical for Friday.

Signs from France suggested a deal was close for a fee which could eventually hit €52m and now it has been claimed that the agreement is over the line.

Guimaraes is expected to swap Lyon for Newcastle before the transfer window slams shut on Monday night.

The midfielder has a number of Premier League suitors, including Arsenal, but Newcastle look to have won the race to snap him up.

Guimaraes will pocket a big salary increase to move to St James’ Park, where Newcastle will hope he can help them to survive.

It remains to be seen if Guimaraes has a specific release clause in his contract in the event Newcastle are relegated.

Signing the player will be a big coup for Newcastle and the club will hope it can tempt more players to follow suit soon.
