Guimaraes has been the subject of heavy transfer speculation, with the Magpies working on a deal to take him to St James’ Park before the transfer window shuts.
Lyon have denied claims that an agreement is in place, but Newcastle are preparing to put the player through a medical.
Other clubs are also interested in the Lyon man and it has been suggested he is firmly on Tottenham’s radar.
It was speculated that Spurs were preparing their own offer for the midfielder, setting up to rival the Magpies in their pursuit of Guimaraes.
However, the north London club have had no formal discussions with the French club regarding Guimaraes and the Magpies are the only ones to have made contact with them; it remains to be seen if Tottenham do try to kick off talks.
Despite Lyon’s denial, the Magpies are confident of securing the midfielder and will continue talks with the Ligue 1 side.
Apart from the Magpies and Spurs, the midfielder has also been linked to Arsenal, but with talks ongoing with the French club, Newcastle remain in pole position to secure his services.
