David Moyes has made landing a centre-back a priority in this month’s transfer window due to an injury to Angelo Obgonna.
The Hammers want Marseille star Caleta-Car, who has been repeatedly linked with a move to the Premier League in recent transfer windows.
They want to land him on loan with an option to buy though, while Marseille favour a permanent sale and are not open to a loan on those terms.
As such, West Ham’s chances of landing the Croatia international this month are considered to now be slim.
There is time remaining in the window for the Hammers to land a defender, but even if they do, it may not be Caleta-Car.
Moyes also wants to bring in a striker this month.
West Ham have been linked with several players, including Ben Brereton-Diaz, but there has been not been substantial movement on that front.
