The Dutch champions have been chasing Bergwijn all month and are still pushing to sign the winger ahead of Monday’s transfer deadline.
Spurs rejected an €18m bid from the Dutch giants earlier in the window and Bergwijn’s heroics against Leicester earlier this month seemed to have closed the case on his departure from the north London club.
But his future at the club is still uncertain and Ajax have now got close to meeting Bergwijn’s asking price.
Spurs want a fee of around €25m for his sale and according to Dutch daily De Telegraaf, Ajax are prepared to offer as much as €22m to get their hands on the winger.
Ajax coach Erik ten Hag is pushing for the move as he feels Bergwijn could emerge as the difference in the title race this season.
Marc Overmars, the Ajax director of football, is keen to get the player for Ten Hag and is in talks with Tottenham.
But the Ajax board are not prepared to release any extra funds and therefore, Overmars does not have too much financial flexibility at the moment.
It is also unclear whether Antonio Conte will sanction his sale after Spurs missed out on two targets in Adama Traore and Luis Diaz.
