The experienced Swiss coach was in advanced negotiations with Palace last year to become their new manager and a deal was more or less done between the two sides.

But Favre backed out of the talks and decided to continue his hiatus from football management while Crystal Palace roped in Patrick Vieira as their new manager.

The 64-year-old insisted that his reason to reject Crystal Palace at the last moment was just down to the fact that he felt that it was too soon for him to get back into football manager.

It was just six months after he was sacked at Borussia Dortmund and he felt that was too short of a break between two roles.

Favre is full of praise for Crystal Palace’s hierarchy and is happy to see the work Vieira has been doing at Selhurst Park.

He told French sports daily L’Equipe when asked why he backed out of the Palace negotiations: “It was too soon.

“They said to me, ‘what more we can do?’, but nothing [could have been done]. It just was just a matter of timing.

“Six months of break, it was too little.

“But the discussions with Palace were wonderful and I am happy for Patrick Vieira that he is there.

“They have really good leaders and I had told them that I could withdraw from the discussion at any time as it was coming too soon.

“That wouldn’t be the case now.”

Favre is prepared to get back to management and is still being linked with jobs in the Premier League.
