Rudoni has impressed this season for the Black Cats’ fellow League One club AFC Wimbledon, and he subsequently garnered interest from both Barnsley and Sunderland.
The Tykes are currently bottom of the Championship table and are need to inject new life into their season as they bid to get out of trouble.
They settled on the Wimbledon midfielder as a suitable target for this month but they had an approach rejected by the Dons.
The Tykes are now out of the running for Rudoni in what could be a boost for the Black Cats in their own chase.
The Black Cats are looking to head in the opposite trajectory of the Tykes’ current incline as they look to achieve promotion to the Championship.
They are interested in bringing Rudoni to the Stadium of Light to strengthen their midfield, although they too like the Tykes failed with an approach to the Dons.
Rudoni has made 23 appearances in the league this term, not missing a game since September, and he has scored seven goals in addition to registering two assists.
