The Magpies held talks with Manchester United over signing Lingard on loan earlier in the transfer window, but the potential deal collapsed as the Red Devils’ terms were not ones Newcastle were willing to meet.

Lingard remains at Manchester United, despite being out of contract at the club in the summer and able to move on a free transfer.

He has been linked with other clubs, but it was thought a possible move to Newcastle was dead in the water.

Newcastle though are continuing to monitor Lingard’s situation as the hours tick down in the January transfer window.

It is claimed that any deal is still doubtful, but Newcastle continuing to keep the door open to a possible late swoop may be seen as significant.

Lingard made a big impact on a loan spell at West Ham last season and Newcastle were looking for more of the same from the attacker.

All eyes will be on whether there is movement which could take Lingard to the north east, or whether West Ham make a late push to again sign a player they covet.
