Lingard wants to move on from Old Trafford to seek regular first team football and had been given Ralf Rangnick’s blessing to make the switch.
Newcastle and West Ham have both been making efforts to sign the attacker before the window closes tonight.
However, despite Lingard wanting to go and Rangnick having no objection, Manchester United’s board still needed to sign off and negotiate the loan.
And they have now told Lingard he will not be able to depart today.
Despite bids in from West Ham and Newcastle, Manchester United have chosen to keep hold of Lingard for the final six months of his contract.
He will now have to knuckle down under Rangnick and try to secure playing time at Old Trafford.
Manchester United are down one attacking player at present following the arrest of Mason Greenwood.
