Newcastle, along with West Ham, were trying to sign Lingard on loan from Manchester United and the player was keen to move to St James’ Park, with the Hammers ruled out due to their status as the Red Devils’ top four rivals.

The Magpies put in a fresh offer and were willing to pay a survival bonus to Manchester United, but the move will not happen.

Lingard has been told he is staying at Manchester United until the end of the season.

And it has been claimed that Lingard is gutted by the news.

He wanted to move away from Manchester United on loan in order to play regular first team football over the second half of the season.

Newcastle were keen to have Lingard through the door as the final act of their January transfer window recruitment.

Barring a late change of heart by Manchester United though he is staying at Old Trafford.
