The Reds paid for leaving it late in their pursuit of Carvalho on deadline day and failed to sign the 19-year-old Fulham midfielder.

They had an agreement in place with Fulham and the player was convinced about the move as well but they just ran out of time to get the deal over the line.

Carvalho remains a target for Liverpool for the summer and the Reds want to agree on a deal with Fulham without having to go to a tribunal given he is an under-24 player who will be out of contract.

It has been claimed that the Reds are also confident that the player will choose to join them in the summer given he spoke with Jurgen Klopp.

But Liverpool cannot approach the player for a move until the third week of May to negotiate a contract.

However, clubs from outside England will now be free to negotiate a pre-contract with the midfielder.

Several clubs in France, Italy and Spain have been tracking the young midfielder for a summer move.

Liverpool are wary that the player could accept a counteroffer from a club in Europe before they can speak to him again.

Fulham would be due a paltry compensation feel if Carvalho decides to join a club in Europe.
