The Hammers were quiet for most of the winter window before springing into life towards the end when they put in ambitious bids for players such as Kalvin Phillips and Darwin Nunez.

Both Leeds and Benfica refused to sell with so little time left to sign adequate replacements for either player.

West Ham’s transfer window approach has been roundly criticised and Agbonlahor feels the club missed a golden opportunity to really push for a place in the top four this season.

He conceded that it was clear that West Ham needed new signings and believes the way they approached the window, it seemed that the club never really believed that they will finish top four.

The former striker said on talkSPORT: “I was saying to West Ham fans even in November that they need players in.

“They need another top-class striker because Antonio shouldn’t be just guaranteed to start every game, they needed someone to push him to get his form up as well.

“For me, West Ham basically just gave up on top four. It was the perfect chance for them to get it.

“Spurs aren’t the finished article, Arsenal have lost players and they are looking a bit shaky, Manchester United have let players go and they are looking a bit shaky as well.

“For me, it was the perfect time for West Ham to finally push that little bit of more and bring in a few more players – a defender, a central midfielder and a striker – to go and get top four.”

West Ham tried to sign Duje Caleta-Car on deadline day but they failed to reach an agreement with Marseille.
